This is a freshwater highly esteemed food fish of peninsula India. It is found in rivers above tidal reaches and in large natural tanks. The fish resembles to rohu in body shape, however it has larger dorsal fin, higher body depth and highly fringed lips with prominent barbels. Grows to a length of 91 cm. Non aggressive fish and can be kept along with other carps in a community tank. The ideal water quality parameter are temperature 24-28 °C, pH 7.6-8.4 and moderate hardness. Mainly herbivorous, feeding on diatoms, blue-green and green algae, higher aquatic plants, insects and detritus. In aquaria, the fish can be fed any formulated diet specially made for herbivorous fishes. Males and females are distinct only during breeding season when males have rough pectoral fins and females with bulging abdomen. Spawn once during the southwest monsoon in the Western Ghats. It is a prolific breeder and lay semi-buoyant eggs in flowing waters..
