The fish inhabits fresh or brackish water, particularly slow-moving areas such as swamps, lakes and large rivers. It grows to a length of 70 cm. The natural colour of fish is a pale to golden yellow, with silvery pale blue stripes running vertically along its body; however albino variants are totally white. Gourami's are omnivorous and prefers algae-based foods but also eat meaty foods items like bloodworms, tubifids and brine shrimps. Males can be identified with having a hump just above their eyes and a pointed dorsal fin ends in a point while females have thicker lips. Giant Gourami  is an egg layer and the male build a bubble-nest at water surface before spawning. The fish breeds in aquarium easily near the bubble nest where eggs are attached to the bubbles. The parental care is observed by male fish. The female should be removed to a separate tank after spawning. The eggs hatch in 24 hours.
