This species of molly is found in Yucatan species is distinguished from other mollies due to presence of very large and long dorsal fin. Extremely peaceful with respect to other aquarium dwellers and do very well in community aquarium. They can also live in quiet a large variable water quality. The ideal temperature is 25-28 °C. It is omnivore and eat a lot, with a predilection for algae and other vegetable food. They consume dry and live food as well. Mature males can be distinguished by gonopodium and large size dorsal fin. Ovoviparous and give birth to large clusters (up to 70 fish). Young ones should be reared separately by removing parents from the aquarium. Feed the young ones brine shrimp nauplii or finely powdered commercial fish feed. There are several variants of sailfin molly available in ornamental trade. The gold coloured giant sailfish molly, with or without red eyes, and the silvery-white and spotted varieties are very fashionable and spotted.
