This species is the second largest species of scaled fish found in the Amazon basin. It has been Introduced in many countries of the world including India where it is thriving well. It  grows to a length of 100 cm and weigh over 20 kg. The optimum temperature range is 22-28 °C, hardness 0-15 dGH and pH 5.5 to 7.5. Herbivorous in feeding and eats fruits, nuts and seeds and some time also takes insects, zooplankton and small fish. In the aquarium, offer it a varied diet consisting of quality dried pellets or floating sticks, along with plenty of fruit and vegetables.  It is a shoaling species and can be kept in a group in the aquarium. Mature females are a little rounder-bellied than males. The fish is bred by induced breeding for culture practices at some places. Pacu resembles quiet similar to piranah, however earlier has molar teeth for crushing vegetable and nuts whereas, piranah has sharp triangular canine teeth like sharks..
