This is a freshwater food fish of India and considered as one of the tastiest food fish. It grows to a length of 200 cm and weight up to around 45 kg. The fish is cultured vastly in India in tropical and sub-tropical areas and contribute largest share among the farmed fishes. The ideal water quality for the fish is temperature 28-30 °C, pH 7.5-8.5 and hardness 100-140 ppm. It is herbivorous and feeds on algae and vegetable debris.  Readily accept artificial feeds made up of large number of feed ingredients like oil cakes, brans, flour of cereals, etc. Maturity is attained in the second year of life and male and female are easily identifiable. It breeds in running water systems during monsoon. Captive breeding through induced maturation is done on large scale in the country. It is a prolific breeder and a fish of one kilogram lay 2.0 lakh eggs. Hatching occurs in 24 hours and baby fry feed on plankton. A red variant of Rohu is found in Malda in West Bengal.
