Thrust Areas

Thrust Areas

The future thrust of the institute would prominently focus on development of new technologies pertaining to emerging needs of the country in the context of IPR regime. The exploration and documentation of germplasm at species and genetic stock levels will be the mainstay. Further, capacity building will be taken up for exploration of germplasm at genomic levels. In addition to generation of knowledge, importance will be given for utilization of the generated knowledge for conservation efforts.

  • Exploration programmes for assessment of fish biodiversity in different river basins and biodiversity rich regions, and discovery of new germplasm resources
  • Development of databases on fish and shellfish genetic resources in the country and also in different river basins and eco-regions.
  • Population characterization for documenting intra-specific genetic variation
  • Development of regional live gene banks for ex situ conservation of endemic and threatened fish species
  • Valuation of genetic resources
  • Development and maintenance of germplasm repository
  • Risk assessment system for decision making and management of exotics
  • Genetic resources of Indian major carps and their management
  • Sperm banking for ex situ conservation and aquaculture applications
  • Genome explorations of important cultivable species
  • Research programmes on cutting-edge areas like stem cell research, cell line development, surrogate broodstock, functional genomics and mapping of genes etc.
  • Evaluation of new potential exotics for aquaculture development and assessment of their impacts on indigenous fish fauna
  • Establishment of aquatic animal disease surveillance system and responding to disease emergencies
  • Development of molecular diagnostic techniques for important fish pathogens and their management
  • Research on prophylactic and curative measure for improved health management in aquaculture , with emphasis on diseases of national concern
  • Capacity building in terms of expertise and necessary infrastructure, in new areas
  • Human resource development and technology dissemination
