Golden mahseer is available all along the Himalayas from Kashmir to Assam in India. It is a mighty sport and highly delicious food fish. Inhabit streams, riverine pools and lakes. Found in rapid streams with rocky bottom. It grows to a length of  275 cm and may weigh up to 54 kg. Due to continuous decline in its population, the fish has been categorized under the endangered species. It has been recently declared State Fish by Himachal Governmennt. Body  covered with golden, large-size cycloid scales. that gives it golden appearance. The fish needs environment of temperature 13-30 °C, pH 7.4-8.0 and low to moderate hardness.   Bottom dwelling, omnivorous and feeds on zooplankton, dipteran larvae, small fishes and plant matter Sexes are distinct only at maturity. Matures in three years and breeds in fast flowing rivers and rivulets during monsoon. Captive breeding of this fish has been achieved.
